Trim the Fat this Holiday Season
Worried about holiday parties and family dinners? We’ve got advice.
Let’s explore a low-carb vs. low fat diet and the best alcohol choices to keep the weight off this holiday season.
A recent study showed that a low-fat diet may help dieters lose more body fat than a low-carb diet. A low-fat diet can be defined as restricting dietary fat to less than 30% of total calories consumed. Some believe that increased fat in the diet is a leading cause of all kinds of health problems, especially heart disease.
Blood pressure can be managed by following either of these diet options.
Red and white wine are both excellent choices for watching your weight. Although red wine contains a few more carbs, it also has more antioxidants.
A solid choice to ensure the biggest reward with fewest calories is drinking your alcohol neat or on the rocks. Remember, when you add mixers that are sweet and flavorful, you increase your calorie intake. A good alternative to adding flavor to your drink is using a fresh fruit (i.e. lemon or lime) and/or a low-calorie mixer.

Students of the Month: Gwen and Anthony Mudge
Anthony and Gwen have been faithful members of Triumph since 2015.
Anthony recalls that it was the close quarter hand-to-hand combat technique that captured his interest. Gwen’s motivation to start training was a little more intense. She said that it was the untimely death of her daughter’s college friend that made up her mind that it was time to learn how to defend herself.
Both Anthony and Gwen have developed tremendously in both their fitness and Krav Maga abilities.
Anthony says, “I remember while driving to join Triumph my wife and I looked at each other and asked ‘what are we doing? Are we crazy?’ I felt a little intimidated not knowing what to expect. All that intimidation left once we walked through the doors. The staff was friendly, professional, and encouraging.”
Gwen says “ I have not only learned how to defend myself, but I have made new friends and gained a workout family in the process.”
Both are valued members of our training facility and we can’t wait to see what the future holds.

Instructor Spotlight: Vin Chary
First off, congratulations are in order. While many of us were daydreaming about holiday cooking and sleeping in, Vin was in L.A., fighting for his Second Dan Black Belt. As the owner and leader of Triumph Krav Maga, Vin is an inspiration to students and instructors alike. Why is he so good at what he does? He’ll probably tell you that it’s willpower.
One week earlier, Vin was cheering on Triumph members on as they took their yellow-belt test—the first in a long line of belts before black. He chooses to surround himself not only with Krav Maga masters, but also people who are just beginning their Krav Maga journey.
That’s because he believes in Krav Maga as a philosophy and a way of life. “It’s not just for the elite athlete,” he’s said. “It’s not an art that people have to train at for years and years to learn something.”
Of course, it takes years and a lot of dedication to become a Second Dan Black Belt and a Purple Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. But the foundation of Krav Maga is meant to be simple, something that takes our natural responses and improves them. Something that everyone can learn, no matter their age or physical fitness. Something that saves lives.
Vin wants to share this knowledge with his community. He wants his members to save their own lives, whether it’s because of what they learn in class or the health benefits that go with practicing Krav. This is why he’s so proud of his latest project: bringing Triumph to Metairie. By the end of the year, new members will have access to the self-defense techniques that are so badly needed in New Orleans.
Why is Vin so good at what he does? Like the rest of us, he has family, interests and obligations outside of Krav Maga. He hosts a contemporary jazz radio show every Friday on WWOZ. He deals with the minutiae of owning a small business. He has every opportunity to make excuses not to train, and that is why he’s so good at what he does: Vin makes no excuses.
These are just a few of the reasons that we look up to our head instructor. Vin is a superhero, training alongside Navy SEALs and SWAT, but he’s also one of us. He can be seen alongside Triumph members in Cardio Bag, Yoga, and downstairs at Nola BJJ. He’s approachable, even in his gi. And he cares about the well-being of his community.Read More

Does Size Really Matter in Self Defense?
We talked to a couple of our smaller sized Krav Maga experts and this is what they had to say. A larger opponent will naturally have certain advantages such as a longer reach, strength, and size. However, Krav Maga was made for everyone. The techniques, when done properly, will work but it is important to remember to train what works best for your body. For example, if your elbow strike doesn’t reach your opponent’s face, throw a palm strike! Its that simple. Train yourself to respond with ballistic speed, explosiveness, aggression, and know how to target vulnerable areas.
There are awesome benefits to being a smaller fighter. Some of these are agility, speed, and quicker recoil with less time in between strikes. Always remember, effectively using what you have is more important than size. We have to assess ourselves appropriately, be smart, and prepare ourselves to flip the aggressive switch. Don’t rest in a false sense of security. There is no “cute” self defense training. Train hard and train well. Allow yourself to be tested and always be open to adjustments so you can grow. This is how you overcome.Read More
Get in Shape, Go Home Safe : The TOP THREE Reasons You Should Practice Krav Maga
Functional fitness (coordination, balance, reaction speed, strength, flexibility)
Functional fitness training is amazing because it is both practical and realistic. This type of training will condition your body to function correctly during day-to-day activities. Krav Maga classes address flexibility, core power, balance, strength, and plyometric bursting. No matter if the task requires carrying a laundry basket or catching yourself if you fall, this type of focused training allows you to perform in daily life with ease and without injury.
Weight loss/Toning (burn fat, condition, increase cardio endurance, tone muscles)
Weight loss and toning are some of the primary results you see when you train in Krav Maga. The intensity of the workout promotes fat burning, endurance, and total body conditioning. Krav Maga is not only engaging, efficient, and realistic, it is fitness training at its peak. It’s not just strength-training!
Self-Defense (feel empowered, drop fear, save lives)
There isn’t a single downside to learning self defense! Training in Krav Maga gives you a sense of empowerment, better situational awareness and the skills necessary to confidently defend yourself or someone else if the situation arises, no matter who you are. People of all sizes, ages, and fitness levels learn effective self defense, and every day we come across proof that Krav Maga saves lives.
